My thesis statement for the research paper on "the flaws of text messaging"

.....

. Although texting may be easier than talking in person, there are many flaws which include miscommunication, lost messages, and even the loss of skill that people need to communicate with others in the real world.

New Annotation:

   First source for research paper.........

Gelernter, D. (2012, March 26). The Pros and Cons of Cyber English. The Wall Street Journal, p. A17. Retrieved April 11, 2013, from Academic Search Premier

-This was an article in the Wall Street Journal all about the modern way people are typing and using the English language. It's filled with smiley faces, and other expressions. It allows people to send pictures, along with messages which is creating a whole new type of language almost like a gray area between writing and showing a video. The author discusses how people don't realize what it was like years ago when your only option was pen and paper. Mail was sent through the postal service, rather than just pushing a send button on your computer. The author then goes on to conclude that the English language will always be stronger than the power of modern technology, and it will always be there was a "backup" to whatever else is invented and trending in the future.

-This source is reliable because it was found in a database full of scholarly articles. It's written by a known author from the Wall Street Journal.

-This article is going to help my paper because it discusses how much stronger the written language is than modern technology. It discusses the flaws within cyber English and how people don't understand the laziness behind it. I plan on using this in my paper when talking about the many flaws within text messaging, cell phones, and how it's destroying the skill of talking to others in person.

This weeks reading was the start to our entertainment section. We are starting to discuss the difference between what it entertaining for a specific person, compared to what entertainment is in general. One of our readings that was about entertainment was about a man who played his violin in the subway. He was actually a world famous, highly paid musician that was placed into an irregular setting to see the public's reaction. Rather than his usual attire of a tuxedo, they dressed him in normal jeans, a t shirt, and baseball cap. When he put out his case, and started to play in front of people, the results were amazing. Out of the thousands of people who walked by, only a handful stopped to listen. He was playing some of the most challenging pieces known to the violinist world. Some who stopped to watch were clearly entertained, but others seemed to do it just to be polite. And everyone only stayed for a few minutes. This triggered a debate in our class about whether or not he was entertaining to the public. I feel that if people were notified of who he was, they would have stopped and payed more attention. Also, I feel like people on the subway are in too much of a hurry to get to work and don't necessarily have time to stop and listen. You also have to take into consideration that many people don't even listen to classical violin anymore. Overall, there were many different outcomes of why people didn't stop to enjoy the music, but it will always be based on one's personal preference of what is actually entertaining.

Today's reading was about technology. The first story was about a group of people who use the popular social media site known as Myspace. It discussed an incident where Myspace shut down for a period of time. Within this time, people's reactions and feelings truly were affected. People felt lost, and didn't know how to function. I think it's pretty crazy that someone can be so attached to something so fake. The second reading was about a man who has a serious problem when it comes to technology. He wakes up, and before even brushing his teeth, he turns on his computer and checks every social media site available. After that, he checks his phone, and the various things he keeps on that. He goes on to talk about how he uses his media sites, and the different strategies that he goes through to make his opinions on different people. I think that its ridiculous that people have lost communication with each other in person. The way we act is totally different with the invention of social media.

The reading from pages 119-124 were about different groups of people within a larger community. In this case, they were talking about a college or university. It discussed how people are perceived differently and act differently just because they go to different schools. The reading then goes on to talk about how the groups within a college or university act different from each other as well. The second half of the reading was on Jon Stewart's Commencement Address to the college of William and Mary. He took a totally different approach from a normal commencement speech. Most are long, boring and very tedious. Stewart used a lot of comedy, yet his message was sincere. He talked a lot about real life situations, and gave it to the audience straight forward, and maybe even a little "blunt". Overall, I feel it was an effective job because it definitely kept the audience's attention.

Today in class we were told to blog about our progress with our poster project. The assignment is for us to make a digital poster of a topic that helps identify who we are. I chose to base my project on my hometown of Milton, Mass. I'm going to work on a few different sub topics such as childhood sports, friends, school, and family. These sub topics are definitely main contributors to the person that I have become. Experiences with all of them have given me knowledge, and opinions on things in the world, and I can truly say that each of them have molded me into who I am today. I also chose to do my project on an online program called Glogster. I've never used it before, but I feel that I can play around with the different settings and options and make a very creative project.
